Recruitment of Ringers is Rampant in Rutland

I have been lucky enough to attend a number of events at towers in the Rutland Branch and was really impressed with the efforts put in to make each occasion a success.

Oakham held an Open Tower event alongside the church fete which was successful in raising money for necessary refurbishment work, and raised interest in what the ringers do.

Preston held an open ringing session to celebrate the work that had been done there.  They had some magnificent displays about bellringing and the completed work and even a live feed showing the bells in action.  They have about 10 learners under the tutorage of Alan Ellis.

Gretton held a recruitment session alongside a coffee morning in the church.  The Guild “Flying Squad” attended to help local ringers provide some demonstrations of ringing and allow those interested to have their first go at handling a bell.  They will now be taught to ring as a group led by Brain Newman at other local towers before going back to form a local band at Gretton.

At each of these events, the Guild pop-up displays were in use.  If you are interested in borrowing them, please contact me.

However, success does have its drawbacks - there is a need to have some experienced ringers to help teach bell handling on Saturday mornings.  If you think you can help, please contact the Guild Master, Simon Dixon This email address is being protected from spambots. There is also a plan to hold a Plain Bob training session at Uppingham led by the “Flying Squad” (contact Simon Dixon if you are interested in using or being part of the Flying Squad).
