It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of our fellow ringer Peggy Jennings.

A studious observer of peal boards in our towers will notice the frequency with which her name appears. This is testament to her extensive contribution to branch achievements. Her skill and expert knowledge was invaluable in these formal situations. It was also her constant support and encouragement for everyone, from learners to experienced ringers, that made her a much loved and respected member of Rutland branch.

Peggy began ringing more than 70 years ago in March, Cambridgeshire. In 1953 she moved to London to undertake a dispensing apprenticeship at Boots and opportunities for ringing were very limited due to war damage to London’s churches. In 1956 she moved to Peterborough and began a family during which time her ringing was put on hold. Peggy moved to Oakham and joined Peterborough Guild in 1969. Peggy was involved in more ways than just ringing and organised tours and outings to places including Tinmouth, Minehead, Malvern, and Cromer.

Peggy has rung 50 peals and hundreds of quarter peals providing stability for the team with her skilled ringing. She has rung all over the country and also in New Zealand where her son Robert now lives. She remembered the earthquake that destroyed Christchurch cathedral and was following the reconstruction with interest.

In June 2019, Peggy received her honorary certificate celebrating 50 years membership of the Peterborough Guild.

The whole of the Rutland branch pass their respects to Peggy’s family. Following her funeral it is intended that a memorial service will be held at Brooke church with the date to be announced in due course.
